BAS DE KONING
Bas de Koning (1973) has been involved in VAT and other Indirect Tax matters for more than 20 years. He started as indirect tax advisor with a Big 4 tax advisory firm in the Netherlands, and later became an in-house VAT expert and director. As such, he has built up extensive experience with and knowledge of global indirect tax issues in day-to-day practice within multinational companies. He lived and worked in the Netherlands, but also in the United States, Cyprus and Switzerland.
In previous positions, Bas worked in an international tax department, where he was responsible for indirect taxes worldwide. This included defining and communicating indirect tax policies and strategies, but also active involvement in lobbying at national and international level.
Bas started with SimplyVAT.nl in 2015, as a freelance indirect tax manager and specialist, and has since carried out several projects and assignments, provided trainings and workshops, and published articles and a book.
Bas is the informal chair of the Dutch European VAT Managers (EVM)– A group of in-house VAT managers and specialists. Bas is also a member of the Indirect Tax Committee of the Tax Executives Institute (TEI).
And he is the chief editor of VATupdate.com, a website with daily VAT news from around the world.

His experience includes conducting VAT reviews, ‘translating’ VAT rules into business processes and vice versa, developing ‘Indirect Tax Tools’, managing daily VAT and other indirect tax related matters, developing and giving VAT trainings, discussing / negotiating with tax authorities and tax advisors, as well as with in-house controllers and other departments, and developing indirect tax strategies.
In addition to dealing with indirect taxes, Bas likes playing the guitar, he plays tennis and he can be found on his mountain bike in the North Holland dunes every week.
